Gallery Space of Monroeville Public Library will be hosting an exhibition of artistic, hand-made books created by members of the Pittsburgh Book Arts Collective. This exhibit will run from May 7-28, 2016 and is free and open to the public during library hours. Some pieces of artwork will be for sale and a portion of all sales will help to support the Library. There will be an opening reception on Saturday, May 7, from 6-8PM — all are welcome!
Books in this exhibition were created by members of the Pittsburgh Book Arts Collective, a regional group that seeks to provide a forum for those interested in the book arts. Members have led and attended workshops in the Pittsburgh area and beyond, and their works have been exhibited at local venues such as Society for Contemporary Craft, University of Pittsburgh, Sewickley Library, and the Squirrel Hill Library. Some members have exhibited, worked and produced commissioned work internationally.
Book arts are a synthesis of form and content between the traditional book and contemporary art, and include a variety of areas of expertise, including traditional bookbinding structures, calligraphy, paper-making, collage, printing, artist’s books, sculptural books, altered books, box making, experimental arts and electronic techniques. The artists use the book format in unique, personalized and often unconventional ways, using images, words, materials, forms, colors and shapes to convey their messages.
